FETE LABS

Fete Labs/Fetelabs Task Bar

GNOME extension · 4.2.5

Fetelabs Task Bar

One floating bar for GNOME with your apps, windows, tray and clock, and it is water: it moves with whatever is playing and takes its colours from your wallpaper. Open source under the GPL; the download from this site is US$2.49.

  • The bar is a liquid audio visualizer, coloured by your wallpaper
  • The start button is the Fete Labs tube, drawn live: it bubbles with the music and opens Fetelabs ArcMenu
  • A mini player: the cover art, then the controls floating on water in the cover’s colours
  • While the mini player is open, the bar’s controls become a paint splash that plays to the vocals
  • Show Desktop is a four-star Dragon Ball whose liquid sloshes with the music

Three minutes on a real desktop, sound on

For Dragon Ball fans

For lovers of Dragon Ball and its greatest transformation, Teen Gohan going Super Saiyan 2. The boot screen is a four-star Dragon Ball that sloshes while the computer starts. Then the desktop opens on Gohan, and the water in the bar turns into a golden aura with lightning crackling through it, timed to the power-up sound. When the sound ends, the water comes back. This mod is free for all, on GNOME only: unzip it and run sh install.sh. The aura burns in Fetelabs Task Bar 4.2.5 and later.

From boot to desktop, sound on

A fan tribute, not an official product. Dragon Ball, Gohan and Super Saiyan are the work of Akira Toriyama, and all rights belong to him and their rights holders.

Your wallpaper picks the colours

Four wallpapers, four colours, and none of them a preset. The bar reads the wallpaper you set and takes its colours from it, and changes when you change it. The mini player does the same with the album art of the song that is playing.

  • A GNOME desktop under pink cherry blossom with Fetelabs Task Bar: the mini player open at the left with the album cover, a seek bar and the controls floating on red water, and the bar’s player controls turned into a red paint splash
The mini player, in the album art’s colours
  • A purple and pink illustrated lab wallpaper with the bar filled with lilac water, the JOLA FETELABS wordmark dripping through it and a Dragon Ball at the right end
    Lilac, from a purple wallpaper
  • A pineapple floating in a blue tiled pool, with the bar’s water turned the same blue and the wordmark faint beneath its surface
    Blue, from a blue pool
  • Palm trees against a red sunset, with the bar’s water a deep red and the player controls lit in teal
    Deep red, from a sunset

What is in the bar

Water Panel, built in

The bar fills with water that rises and falls with the music, in colours picked from your wallpaper. While Spotify plays, a wordmark of your own splashes through it.

The start button

The first thing in the bar is the Fete Labs tube, drawn live: its liquid rises and bubbles stream up with the music. It opens Fetelabs ArcMenu, our fork of ArcMenu, and so does the Super key. Without it the button opens the app grid.

The player

Back, play and next at the start of the bar. A click opens the mini player; it can also start your Liked Songs at login without the window getting in the way.

The Dragon Ball

Show Desktop is a ball drawn live, its liquid moving with the music. Pick one to seven stars, or swap it for any icon.

How to install it

Buy the download, then run gnome-extensions install fetelabs-task-bar.zip, log out and back in, and turn it on in Extensions. Turn off any other taskbar or dock extension first, so only one taskbar runs.

For the start menu, download Fetelabs ArcMenu and install it the same way: gnome-extensions install fetelabs-arcmenu.zip. Turn off ArcMenu or any other start menu first, so the Super key opens only one.

The water needs python3 with NumPy and parec: sudo apt install python3-numpy pulseaudio-utils. Without them the bar still works, just without the water.
